The Back Cove Design Team has listened carefully to the owners of our own designs and those who own other brands, blending their ideas and suggestions into new and innovative, single diesel engine designs. Our owners are serious about boating and on average have been on the water for more than twenty years with some as many as fifty.

Back Cove fiberglass parts are constructed using our VIP resin infusion technology to build stronger, lighter parts with fewer emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds. Each Back Cove is equipped with a fuel efficient common rail diesel engine and a highly effective bow thruster. Our interior joinery is crafted of renewable American Cherry and the interior layouts are comfortable, practical and elegant.

THE BACK COVE DESIGN TEAM

The Back Cove design team is responsible for translating the companies’ vision into reality, from the conceptual level down to the smallest details. The designers work in the Design and Product Development Department help to shape and evolve current and future models by introducing improved manufacturing details, modern equipment specifications, and the newest construction methodologies. They create hull forms and sculpted deck shapes; generate concepts, technical drawings, and specifications; and communicate ideas using 3D models and detailed renderings. The design team meets regularly to discuss present models and to conceptualize future designs. The design team includes:

  1. Kevin Burns, Vice President of Design and Product Development
  2. Daniel Zilkha, Chairman
  3. Ed Miller, Chairman
  4. Bentley Collins, Vice President of Sales & Marketing
  5. Aaron Crawford, Chief Operating Officer
  6. Dave Newcomb, Engineering Department Head
  7. Adam Carlson, Senior Designer

KEVIN BURNS, Vice President of Design and Product Development Kevin Burns is Back Cove Yacht’s Vice President of Design and Product Development. He grew up in Ohio and attended Miami University of Ohio. He went on to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard where he studied navigation and engineering while stationed aboard cutters based in Maine and Massachusetts. As a civilian, he captained 150-foot vessels supplying rigs in the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico. His experience at sea led him to study Yacht Design at the Landing School in Arundel, Maine. After graduation, Kevin worked under Ward Setzer of the award-winning Setzer Design Group in Cary, North Carolina. At SDG, Burns was lead designer for Wombat, the 82-foot Lyman Morse Motor Yacht, as well as other notable production and custom designs ranging from 20-foot center consoles to 210-foot tri-deck motor yachts. “The architectural concept of ‘informed simplicity’ is something that I carry around with me. It’s both a goal and an approach to design. At Sabre, each design must be a boat first, and that mandate informs the lines, shapes and spaces that eventually grow into a new model.” In April 2006 Kevin joined Back Cove Yachts, and today he lives with his wife and children in mid-coast Maine. In early 2009 Kevin began working as Chief Designer for both Back Cove and Sabre Yachts.
